We lost our precious Cynthia “Jani” Kinnard Collins suddenly on Thursday, April 23. Jani was born on March 3, 1978, and was the second child and only daughter of Houston and Cynthia Kinnard.
Jani was educated in the Metro Nashville Public Schools System and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1996. She went on to attend Tennessee Tech, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems in 2000. She dedicated her professional life to serving others through her work with the State of Tennessee Department of Disability.
Jani lived a vibrant and joyful life filled with passion, creativity, and love for those around her. She had a deep love for travel and explored many destinations both across the United States and abroad. Whether near or far, she cherished experiences that broadened her perspective and brought her joy.
Family was at the center of Jani’s world. She treasured time spent with loved ones, creating lasting memories through laughter, meals, and meaningful conversations. She was an exceptional cook who delighted in preparing large meals to bring everyone together.
Jani was an avid dancer whose talent and passion touched many. She choreographed dances for the Greater Bethel Liturgical Dance Team and was especially known for her work on the “Caribbean Medley.” Her love of dance spanned many styles, including African, line dancing, modern dance, and especially ballroom. She was also the founder and leader of the women’s step team at Greater Bethel, Sisters in Step, where she inspired and mentored others through rhythm, unity, and expression.
In addition to her artistic gifts, Jani was an avid reader who enjoyed diving into books in her quiet moments. She also loved playing board games with her family, bringing out her playful and competitive spirit. A devoted movie enthusiast, she often spent late nights watching films with her daughter, moments that will be forever cherished.
Jani leaves to cherish her loving memory: her parents, Houston and Cynthia Kinnard; her daughter, Cynthia Carolyn Collins; her stepchildren; her brother, Thomas (Nicole) Kinnard; and her beloved nieces and nephews, Devyn, Tavian, Melanie, Morgan, Albert Jr., and Ayana. She also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Jani’s light, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
