Jessie Lee

Jessie Ray Lee, 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on May 28, 1952, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jessie spent most of his life in Kalamazoo before relocating to Nashville in October 2010. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1973. At the age of 24, Jessie received the precious gift of the Holy Ghost—a moment that shaped the rest of his life. His unwavering faith in God and his steadfast devotion to serving Him became the foundation of his character and legacy.

Jessie was a faithful member of Christ Temple Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, under the leadership of the late Bishop Harry Herman. After relocating, he continued his service and spiritual growth at Greater Christ Temple Church in Nashville, Tennessee, under the leadership of Bishop Sherman Merritt for the past sixteen years. Jessie served diligently in numerous ministries, including Trustee on the Church Executive Board, Brotherhood, Sunday School, Usher Board, Sound Ministry, and, alongside his wife, Marriage Enrichment and the Widows and Widowers Love Ministry.

Of all his roles, ushering held a special place in his heart. Greeting each person with a warm smile and a kind word, Jessie made ushering his quiet ministry—a reflection of his love for God, his church, and every soul who walked through its doors.

Though naturally introverted, Jessie never met a stranger. He had a gift for making others feel seen, valued, and important. His gentle spirit and encouraging presence left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Over the years, he worked in manufacturing and custodial services, known for his dependability and strong work ethic, and he possessed many talents, including computer repair, yard maintenance, fishing, and traveling with his beloved wife.

Jessie is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Lela Lee; his sons Jason (Chesney) Lee, Corey Lee, and Andre Lee—all of Kalamazoo, Michigan; four bonus children: Stacey Bonner of Old Hickory, TN; LaVonne (Melrose) Hensley of Clarksville, TN; Robert (Shana) Washington of Grand Rapids, MI; and Ferris (Rhonda) Coleman of Kalamazoo, MI; his brothers Willie (Maureen) Lee of Kalamazoo, MI; Eddie (Jacquelyn) Lee of Sacramento, CA; and Lurone Lee of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren, his great-granddaughter, his spiritual family, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ms. Annie Paynes; his father, Mr. Willie Lee; his brother Charles O’Neal; his sister Ida O’Neal; and his brother Arizona O’Neal.

Jessie lived a life marked by faith, service, and quiet strength. He fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith. He will be remembered for his warm personality, his steadfast dedication, and his unwavering will. His legacy of kindness, faithfulness, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
