Keyona Newell

Keyona Martina Newell, affectionately known as “Ke,” passed away on September 13, 2025, at the age of 41. Her radiant spirit, fierce loyalty, and boundless love left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

Keyona was born on August 7, 1984, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Lucille Newell and Nathan Gray, who nurtured her with strength and grace. From an early age, Ke was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and unwavering compassion. She had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and loved.

Her first job in life was one of the most profound—stepping into a motherly role for her siblings, offering guidance, protection, and unconditional love. That early devotion shaped the woman she became: strong, nurturing, and deeply committed to those she cared for.

She graduated with honors from Strafford High School, where she was admired for her intelligence, determination, and leadership. She later completed culinary school, turning her love of cooking into a professional craft. Whether preparing meals for loved ones or working in a bustling kitchen, she poured her soul into every dish. She also found joy and artistry in her work as a barber, where her steady hands and warm presence made every client feel at ease. Her talents were as diverse as they were heartfelt.

Keyona was preceded in death by her grandparents: Tommie Sue Newell, Edward A. Newell, Joe Louis Gray, Jannie Gray, and Shirley Gray; her great-grandfather John T. Newell; and her great-grandmother Tommie Mai Glenn Newell.

Keyona is survived by her devoted fiancé, Sarita Tolbert (“Redd”), and her beloved godson Davion Burford, whom she shared with Stranesha Burford. She leaves behind her siblings: Latasha Groves (Darrelle Groves Sr.), Eushika “Lucy” Newell, Nathan Newell Jr., and Danielle Newell. Her loving aunts and uncles include Lawanda Newell, Lee Lee Newell, Maria Segura (Mario Lavendar), Shay Martin (William Martin Jr.), Erica Gray, Crystal Gray, Jada Gray, Joerina Hawkins, Xavier Gray, Ivey III Gray, and Anthony Claybrooks, along with many more aunts and uncles who held her close in their hearts. She is also survived by a host of loving cousins who cherished her deeply. She will be deeply missed by her best friends Neciey Ewing and Eric Ballard, and her devoted friends Erica Brooks, Gregory Rycraw, and Will, whose love and support were constants in her life. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Markisha Seagroves, Stranesha Burford, Carlotta Williams, Neciey Ewing, and Erica Brooks for their help and care during Keyona’s transition.
