Malchus Lenard Lane Sr. was born on October 13, 1931, in Cleveland, Tennessee, to the late William “Willie” Lane and Thelma Smith Lane. He was educated in the Cleveland public school system and graduated from high school in 1951. Following graduation, Malchus attended Lane College on a football scholarship, where he excelled both academically and athletically.
While in college, he answered the call to serve his country and joined the United States Army during the Korean War conflict, serving faithfully for three years. After completing his military service, Malchus returned to Lane College to finish his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree. Malchus later continued his education and earned a master’s degree from Tennessee State University, further strengthening his commitment to academic excellence. He went on to build a career as an educator, dedicating more than 40 years teaching science.
Malchus approached education not just as a profession but as a calling, one that he fulfilled with patience, and unwavering devotion until retiring from Metro Nashville Schools in 1992.
He was a spirited football fan, known by family and friends for his allegiance to his favorite teams. Whether he was cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Tennessee Titans, his enthusiasm for the game was a hallmark of his character. Malchus was a proud veteran, often seen wearing his veteran hat. Wherever he went the hat spoke for him and reminding others of the courage and honorable commitment.
Malchus was preceded in death by his beloved wife Odessa Lane, parents, William and Thelma Lane, siblings William Lane Jr, Iva Pearl Sawyer, Marva Jo Brooks and Cornell Lane.
