Mary Elizabeth Cowan-Phillips

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cowan Phillips was born December 17, 1955 in Nashville, Tennessee to the union of Willie Lee, Sr. and Velma Newsome Cowan. She departed this peaceful life on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at her residence in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mary accepted Christ at an early age and was a Christian by faith. Mary was educated in the Nashville Davidson County Schools and was a graduate of North High School.

She married the love of her life Warren Phillips, Sr. “Chubby” in 2003. He preceded her in death.

Mary began her employment at age 14 at the Elliston Soda Shop. It was there she developed a love for cooking and continued that career path over her life time. She continued her employment in food service, she later became a dietitian for many years at a Nursing Home and Meals on Wheels  and finally as head cook at Creekside Manor for the last 9 years of her work experience.

In her spare time Mary enjoyed watching westerns, singing and spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband; she was also preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Velma Cowan, Sr., son, Deron Cowan and brothers, Roy E.(Catherine) Newsom and Willie L. Cowan, Jr.

Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her memories are her children, Kimberly (Larry) Smith, Micheal Cowan, Kiesha (Hakim) Cowan-Russell, Jr., Felicia Rucker, grandchildren, Rickey L. Powell, Jr., Michael L. Mayes, Melissa Mayes, Laila D. Smith, great-grandchildren, Melani Carpenter and James Harris, Jr. aunt, Louise Newsom a host of other relatives and friends.
