Mary Hernandez, born on November 21, 1940, in Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on November 2, 2025, at Tristar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. A dedicated and passionate professional, Mary had a distinguished career as a librarian, serving at various educational institutions including the University of Arizona, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Washington D.C. City Schools, from which she eventually retired.
A proud alumna, she was a 1958 graduate of Haynes High School and later Fisk University, where she laid the foundation for her lifelong love of learning. Renowned for her vast knowledge across a range of subjects, she found immense joy in reading, which she shared with those around her.
Mary was deeply involved in her community and was a devoted member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, contributing to several groups that fostered faith and fellowship. Additionally, she was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she connected with fellow sorority sisters and participated in initiatives that sought to uplift and empower the community.
Mary is survived by her brother, Rafael Hernandez, Jr., her nephew, Rafael Hernandez, III, her devoted friend, Karen Mtshali, and numerous cousins and friends who will cherish her memory and the lasting impact she made on their lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rafael and Mary Hernandez, and her brother, Philip Hernandez.
Visitation services for Mary Hernandez will be held on December 2, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 11:30 PM with Delta Omega Service at 11:30 at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, located at 1700 Heiman Street, Nashville, TN 37208. This will be followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM at the same location.
Mary’s legacy as an educator, a scholar, and a beloved friend will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who knew her.
