Ms. Merlene Miller was born November 24, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late James and Hazel Miller.
She moved to Nashville in 1961 at the age of 4. She was raised by the late Samuel and Annie Crenshaw along with their daughter Doris Crenshaw Malone, who Merlene referred to as her “sister.”
Merlene was educated in the Metro Public Schools and graduated with honors from the Tennessee School for the Blind. She was instrumental in bringing the necessary tools for training the blind to both Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University.
She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age. She was a hard church worker and baptized under Rev. T.J. Griffin at Dixon Memorial Methodist Church.
Merlene joined St. Luke CME Church. She “loved” St. Luke and was a member of two Choirs, the Stewardess Board and the Board of Missions and Evangelism. She remained very active until she developed neuropathy in her feet. Unable to walk any longer she was forced to move into the AHS Nursing Home in February of 2019.
She was preceded in death by a younger brother, Steve.
She leaves to morn her brother, Sylvester, “sister” Doris and her son Quinton, her devoted Aunt Julia Mitchell and a host of family and devoted friends including Sandra McCullough “cousin” and Rosalyn Williamson. Merlene will also be missed by her two faithful “play sisters” Janis Crutcher and Caroline Page who took turns caring for her.
