On August 24, 1973, at the tender age of 17, Michael answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army where he served honorably, including places like South Korea. He went on to complete his upper secondary education while serving his country. Michael finished a 43-year career with the Government of the United States when he retired on December 31, 2016. Besides the army, Michael served and worked in various federal entities: United States Army Reserve; Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital; and lastly the United States Postal Service. His many military accomplishments included: rising to rank of Master Sergeant; receiving The Meritorious Service Medal for exemplary service in the United States Army Reserve in 1996. After retirement in 2016, Michael was able to spend more quality time with family members including being a weekly caregiver for his youngest sister until her demise in 2021. After experiencing a period of boredom, Michael decided to return to work as an employee of Enterprise Rental until his untimely death.
Michael was always striving to improve himself by furthering his education. On May 6, 1996, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from American Baptist College of the American Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught bible study, distributed bibles and often prayed with them. He was the first African American Gideon to visit this facility! He never ceased changing the lives of countless individuals for the betterment of society.
Michael’s childhood upbringing and the principles that he learned guided his life. Michael’s burning faith in the Lord and love for Christ propelled him to share the gospel with anyone who would listen-even telemarketers. During the recent worldwide COVID pandemic, Michael began texting inspirational messages and scriptures to all those on his contact list. Alongside his brother Johnnie Bond Sr., he was instrumental in starting a 30-minute weekly bible study by teleconference for family and friends alike. Michael, we will continue what you started because it brought us closer as family!
Michael’s siblings often said he wore many hats; always offering advice, counsel and guidance to anyone in need. Michael was devout in his faith-a champion for Christ. He had the priceless quality of unwavering love for everyone, embracing people from all walks of life. Michael was loved and admired by all who met him and always had time to help those in need. He was truly our beloved patriarch and anchor of strength for our family! He will truly be missed by all whose lives he touched.
