Mr. Phillip Obraint Morgan Sr., 89 years old, departed this life on Thursday May 15, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. He was born June 17, 1935, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the union of the late Ella and Ernest Morgan.
He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and in his early years united with Mount Gilead Baptist Church and later attended South Englewood Baptist Church. Phillip attended Cameron Elementary in his early years and graduated from Pearl High School on June 3rd, 1955. In Nashville, Tennessee.
After graduating he enlisted in the Army where he served two terms totaling six years. He was stationed in Gerszewski Barracks in Knielingen Germany. During his enlistment he was assigned to the Transportation Department where he escorted Generals, Colonels and Sergeants to and from locations. During his first term he met and worked with Evis Presley who was also stationed at his base. They became friends and bonded with their love of music. He traveled all around the world and met many friends during his journey.
During his military assignment in Newport News, VA, he met and married Nevolia Powers. During this union, Phillip became father to five children. Upon conclusion of his military service, the Morgan family moved to Nashville, TN to be closer to Phillip's brothers and sisters.
Phillip was a very accomplished carpenter, brick layer, plumber, photographer, exterminator and truck driver. His later job as truck driver for CB Raglan led to him becoming a supervisor in the food shipping division.
During his adult life, Phillip received various awards, including the Certificate of Merit on March 26th, 1982, for his support of the Charity Endowment Fund. He became a Master Mason serving the Nashville community and earned his 32nd Degree. He was also honored with the Certificate of Appreciation from The Tuskegee, AL Orchid Club as Marshal for the 1999 Beautillion. In 2017, Phillip was again awarded a Certificate of Recognition for the skills that he displayed at the Senior Tech Academy.
Phillip was known to be kind and generous to all, whether in sickness or in need of help. He was loved and respected by many. For years, he cared for his elder sister Josephine Lake, never leaving her side until her passing. In his senior years, he spent a great deal of his leisure time keeping close ties with his friends at Gernert Studio Apartments. He loved being the DJ at special events and attended all the calendar activities, where he became known as the "King", for being the best dressed and most popular! He was featured in the Apartments December 2024 calendar with his Crown where he was voted as the most popular among friends.
Phillip Sr. wad preceded in death by his mother and father Ella and Ernest Morgan. His siblings; Mary Elizabeth Knight, Josephine Morgan Lake, Evelyn Delores Morgan Lewis, Zerilda Morgan Williams, Norma Mae Morgan, Ernestine Morgan, Charles Harold Morgan, Thomas Morgan, Wendell Morgan, Reginald Morgan, our mother Nevolia Morgan, son, Howard Morgan and grandson Kenneth Lee Jr.
Mr. Phillip affectionately known as "Big Daddy" to his grandchildren, leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory: His devoted children Phillip O. Morgan Jr, Gloria Hector, Patricia (Paul Sharif) Fields and Shelia (Phillip) Cunningham. Grandchildren: Blakley and Cassidy Morgan, Corey and Nawya Hector, Teara and Jordan Lee, Aaron, Phillip Jr., Joseph and Joshua Cunningham, Chaesare, Kaylan and Justin Morgan. Nieces: Mary Elizabith (Michael) Brown, Anna Morgan, Quinetta (Richard)Bartley. Nephews: Michael Morgan, Reginald Morgan, Marise Morgan, Thomas Morgan Jr, Jermaine Morgan, Demarco Morgan, Demerius Morgan. A host of great grandchildren, great-nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Our Father's love and kindness touched everyone's heart. He endured a lot and gave his love to all. Always quiet, never complaining and always grateful for his blessings. While his golden heart has stopped, his earthly body is still, his spirit and his memory will live on forever in our hearts and minds.
