Shirley Truett-Mitchell

January 29, 1949 — April 20, 2023

Shirley Ann Mitchell (74) of Nashville, TN, received her wings on April 20, 2023, at 5:30 am. She was born in Nashville, TN January 29, 1949, to the late Azzle and Larvell Truett. Shirley graduated from Pearl High School, class of 1967, and received her Associate’s Degree from Tennessee State University. On August 13, 1977, she united in holy matrimony to Julius E. Mitchell, affectionately known as Buster, and was blessed with 45 years of love, laughter, and family.

She accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of her life at an early age and was a faithful member of Earnest Newman United Methodist for over twenty years. Later, she transferred her membership to Gordon Memorial UMC, where she continued her high level of service for the past ten years. There, she was involved in various ministries, including serving as a member of the Board of Trustees, until her health prevented her from doing so. She was also active in various clubs, including Red Hatters, Best Years Club, and New Spirit and Friends Mission Group. A retired underwriter in the field of insurance, she dedicated thirty-five years of her life to helping others in their time of need. Faithful to her call, she also served the United Methodist Church as an advisor concerning their insurance affairs.

Shirley was a fiercely loving and giving person who lived into the mandate of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, caring for others and loving all without limits. It was not uncommon for her to give all that she had, even the coat off of her own back. Her home was always open to anyone who needed a dose of holy hospitality. Her quick wit and caring nature made her a friend to all, especially those in need.

Shirley is preceded in death by Azzle Truett (father), Larvell Truett (mother), Mary Elizabeth Truett (sister), Charles Turett (brother), and Doris J. Baker (sister).

She leaves a legacy of love to her husband, Julius E. Mitchell, of Nashville, TN. Children: Stephanie Johnson (Robin) of Nashville, TN, Robert L. Johnson (Angéle) of Germantown, TN, Maurice Dillard, and KeAnthony Dillard, both of Nashville, TN. Grandchildren: Benjamin Johnson, Blake Johnson, Gustavia Dillard, Michael Wade, Mason Wade, Destin Johnson, Kilian, and Andrea. Great-grandchild: Jarvail Smith
