William Smith, Sr.

SMITH, SR., William T. Age 79 of Memphis and Nashville, entered peacefully into eternal rest, surrounded at home by his loving family on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. He was born November 25, 1931 in Memphis, TN. He was a retired Colonel and served as Chaplain for the U.S. Army with 30 years of service. He was a member of Church of the Nations, where his son is the pastor. He was an ordained minister in the C.M.E. Church, and after his retirement from the military, he served as the assistant pastor of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church. He was the chaplain for Community Chapel, formerly Chapel 6 at Ft. Campbell, while stationed there. Following retirement from the military, he pastored at Scotts Memorial, Ebenezer, Whites Chapel, and Dowell Chapel United Methodist Churches for the Tennessee Conference. He is survived by his family: spouse, Lois Willingham Smith of Nashville/Memphis; daughter, C. Alesia Spearman and sons, Ronald William Smith, William Taylor Smith, Jr. (Bill) and wife Charisse of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Taryn Wilburn, Ashley Wilburn, Brielle Smith, Brittany Smith, Taylor Smith and great-grandson, Brandon Scott Settles, Jr., all of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by his brother, Percy Rudolph (Buddy) Smith and nephew, Herman (Donnie) Norwood III. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Cook of Birmingham, AL and Geraldine Satterfield of Memphis, TN, and one sister, Barnetta Norwood. Visitation will be held at Terrell Broady Funeral Home in Nashville, TN from 1 - 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2011. Family will be available from 4:30 - 6 p.m. A Homegoing Celebration will begin on Monday, October 10, 2011. It will be held at Christ Church, 15354 Old Hickory Blvd., Nashville, TN.
